BUTTERFLIES

If a butterfly larva loses a leg it will still have six legs as a fully emerged adult (imago) butterfly.

Microscopic sclaes cover wings like tiles on a roof. Beneath those scales, the butterfly wing is transparent.

Compound eyes see close to 360 degrees.  
Butterflies can also see ultra violet light.

It is estimated that there are about 250,000 scales per square inch on the butterflies wings.

Only about 2 out of every 100 eggs laid survive. If they all survived butterflies would take over the world.

When wings are folded back it exposes ears under the wings that face backwards making it easier to listen for danger.

Wings are transparent as genetic information required to produce scales is missing.

Some species of butterfly have small front legs such as the Monarch which are tucked up and not used for walking on.

Butterflies form a chrysalis which is part of their body,
unlike moths which spin a cocoon with silk.
